Bird tables at the ready: it’s almost time for Birdwatch Ireland’s annual survey, known as the Garden Bird Survey (GBS), enlisting the public’s help to chart the fortunes of Ireland’s birdlife from year to year.
Birdwatch Ireland
The GBS starts in December, with about 1000 people sending in records each year. All you have to do is keep a note of the highest number of each bird species visiting your garden each week through winter, and submit your results online. Visit www.birdwatchireland.ie to join in.
Start feeding birds now and you’ll attract plenty of visitors for your survey. Head down to our garden centre here in Athlone for a superb range of bird feeding stations, from fat balls and peanut feeders to multiple feeders designed to attract a wide range of species. If you’re worried about predators, caged and squirrel-resistant feeders should help keep unwelcome guests at bay.

You’ll also find a range of different feeds specially formulated for winter feeding. As a general guide, dried mealworms are packed with protein and loved by robins and thrushes; high-fat peanuts are a favourite with tits and woodpeckers; and finches are also particularly fond of nyjer seeds. Remember to provide water, and keep feeders and baths clean to prevent the spread of disease.
