How to plant a bulb?

Planting a bulb may seem easy, but knowing the ins and outs of it is very important for your future plant to thrive. Soil type, humidity, depth and spacing are all factors that differ from plant to plant and can make bulb planting harder than you think. Need some advice? Here's how to plant a bulb:

  1. First of all: know when to plant your bulbs. Different bulbs need to be planted around other times of the year, which usually depends on their blooming period.

  2. Knowing where to plant your bulbs also makes a huge difference. Some bulbs need a warmer, sunny spot, whereas others prefer the cooler parts of your garden. Do make sure to pick a location with good drainage, as bulbs can be prone to rotting. Now the planting can begin:

  3. Dig a hole wide and deep enough for your bulbs. Plant most bulbs at two to three times their depth. For example, for a bulb measuring 5cm (2in) high, dig a hole 10-15cm (4-6in) deep and sit the bulb at the bottom of it.

  4. Place the bulbs in the hole with their 'nose', or shoot, facing upwards. Space them at least twice the bulb's own width apart.

  5. Replace the soil and gently firm it with the back of a rake. Avoid treading on the soil as this can damage the bulbs.

  6. If the ground is moist or the bulbs are autumn-planted, watering is not critical—otherwise, water straight after planting.

How to sow seeds?

Growing your own seeds is a great way to save money, as well as sometimes getting your hands on plants that aren't available pregrown. That being said, sowing seeds takes a bit more work than just buying plants and- again- requires a bit of knowledge. Fernhill likes to share with you some valuable tips and tricks on how to sow seeds.

  1. Choose a container for your seeds. This makes it a lot easier to keep your eyes on them and also keeps them separated and organized, should you want to sow different kinds at once or in larger quantities. Handy seed-sowing containers can be found at Fernhill.

  2. Make sure to use quality soil. Seed-starting mixes and potting soils are widely available at Fernhill.

  3. Plant your seeds at the proper depth in the soil. Which depth is best for which kinds of seeds is usually marked on the packet they come in.

  4. Provide your seedlings with enough sunlight. If you don't, they might become leggy and less resistant to outdoor circumstances, lowering their chances of survival.
