Operating out of Fernhill Garden Centre in Athlone, Fernhill Landscapes is a family run certified landscaping contactors. Established in 1984 from humble beginnings, the business has grown to become one of Ireland’s most respected and renowned landscaping contractors.

Fernhill Landscapes is a long standing member of the Association of Landscape Contactors of Ireland (ALCI) and is committed to providing the highest quality service possible to their customers.

The firm is highly recognised and accredited among the Irish landscaping industry having recieved multiple awards and certificates from the ALCI and Bord Bia for work completed throughout their history. With over 42 years in business, Fernhill Landscapes has established strong industry connections and a sourcing network with nurseries that not only spans Ireland, but also across Europe and further afield.

Our Garden Design Service:

Our garden design and build service is ideal for midland clients looking to create a new garden or transform an existing one. It includes a site visit from one of our expert horticulturists, experienced in garden design. During the visit, we assess all key aspects of the site, including:

• Addressing challenges like uneven slopes or varying ground levels
• Assessing and advising on drainage, topsoil, and subsoil conditions
• Designing the layout and materials for driveways and boundary fences
• Positioning structures such as garages and sheds
• Determining the best location, shape, and materials for patios
• Providing guidance on the selection and placement of key plant features like trees and hedges
• Outlining the shape, size, and location of elements such as shrub beds, flower beds, rockeries, water features, fruit and vegetable gardens, and children's play areas.

Our goal is to create a beautiful, functional outdoor space that meets your needs and enhances your garden's potential.

It's important to involve us in the site’s development as early as possible for the best results. The initial site visit typically lasts 1-2 hours, and it’s recommended that all key stakeholders in the layout be present. Before the visit, clients should submit a brief outlining their requirements and any available site plans. An approximate budget and timescale should be discussed at this stage.

During the visit, our designer will share their ideas and document any advice and recommendations. Following this, a set of sketches will be created to scale, reflecting the client's preferences. A second meeting will be scheduled to review and finalize the design. The final plan will highlight all the major features agreed upon, this will allow us to prepare a set of budgets and discuss timescales.

Please note: Designs are drawn to scale and as accurately as possible, though a separate site survey may be needed for more complex sites. The fee covers the initial design based on the consultation; any revisions may incur additional costs.

Please be aware that our design service is not a sales pitch. It is a service focused on creating the best design to meet your needs, allow for accurate pricing and forms an integral part of a schedule of works.

The landscape design provided is a layout plan, which usually fulfills most requirements. However, for more complex projects requiring additional site visits, this can be discussed with the designer beforehand. Our team can also advise on detailed planting plans, landscape proposals for planning permission, and tree surveys, which are priced individually based on the project.

Garden Design Cost

• Small town garden with a simple layout: €600*
• Medium-sized gardens (approx. ½ acre): €800*
• Large gardens, complex designs, and special projects: €1000+*

A deposit of €200 is required when booking an appointment, payable by card. The remaining balance is due by card before the drawings are produced.

We also offer a call-out service for €200, where a designer will visit your site for a one-hour consultation, providing a verbal assessment and suggestions for improvements. Additional time is charged at €80 per hour. This service does not include drawn plans or quotations, as a design plan is required for those.
