Join in Ireland’s SpudLove 2016 and show off your love of the good old potato, as Bord Bia and GIY International launch a nationwide competition to find the gardener with the greatest dedication to Ireland’s most famous vegetable.
Choose seed potatoes this week from the fine selection on sale in our garden centre here in Athlone, plant the tubers out straight away in rich, well-prepared soil around 20cm deep and 45-60cm apart, and keep them well-watered and fed through the season.
Then this summer, join in your local ‘Spud Off’ heat – the first stage in the competition to find Ireland’s favourite spud. If you haven’t got one happening near you already, why not get together with your local community garden or growing group and register your own? You’ll get all the information you need to organise a summer Potato Party and competition from www.giyinternational.org/spudlove.
The winner of each local competition goes forward to the national ‘Spud Off’ final at the new GROW HQ building in Waterford City, with the winner of Ireland’s most spud-loving gardener announced on National Potato Day in October.
