What to do in the garden in June:

What to do in the garden in June:

Flaming June is a month to relish the results of all your hard work in the garden – but don't rest on your laurels for too long s it's also time to get the show going for autumn fireworks.

General tasks:

  • Keep weeding and dead-heading to maintain beds, borders and container displays at their absolute best
  • Give tired lawns a boost with a liquid feed to green it up and boost growth.

Ornamental garden:

  • Inspect your roses for aphids and blackspot – pick off infected leaves or spray to control the disease.
  • Prune spring-flowering shrubs including deutzia, philadelphus and weigela, thinning one in three of the oldest stems.
  • Tidy up hellebores once they've finished flowering, removing old leaves so new young foliage is displayed.

Kitchen garden:

  • Keep on top of watering especially in the greenhouse where temperatures are soaring: automatic dripper systems, available here in our garden centre at Athlone, take some of the strain
  • Harvest your vegetables and eat them as fresh as possible: new potatoes, broad beans, salads and strawberries are all ready to enjoy this month.
  • Plant winter brassicas such as sprouts, cabbages and purple sprouting broccoli, filling your winter veg beds with ready-grown plugs from the range in our garden centre.
